The Global Quiz Bowl: Competing and Cooperating through Compressed Video
Kontos, George; Mizell, Al P.
TechTrends: Linking Research & Practice to Improve Learning, v49 n6 p16-21 Nov-Dec 2005
"Students Around the world exchanging over the phone" (SAXophone) was the result of a collaboration among educators from Sweden, New York and Florida to allow students from participating schools experience compressed videoconferencing with other students from across the world. After several years of participating in the regular SAXophone events, the coordinator at a New York high school became interested in developing a quiz format over compressed video. In this study, the authors examine the effectiveness that SAXophone's Quiz Bowl participation has had on students. Results reveal that the particular group of participants who responded to the survey thought that the Global Quiz Bowl activities helped students feel comfortable with technology, increased students' exposure to new ideas, and increased students' motivation for learning.
