Bowling for a Lifetime Using Sport Education
Pritchard, Tony; McCollum, Starla
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v79 n3 p17-23 Mar 2008
With adolescents becoming physically inactive as they age, one must think of other activities to teach during the middle and secondary years in physical education. One lifetime activity that physical education teachers could promote is bowling, an individual sport that could be taught in the gym or in a bowling alley. By using an instructional model that promotes student learning in an environment that is exciting for students, teachers may be able to increase the likelihood that students will continue to participate in a lifetime activity. An instructional model is a blueprint that a teacher can follow to ensure that the learning materials are provided to students in the best possible way (Metzler, 2005). One instructional model that has been chosen by physical educators is the sport education model (SEM). The purpose of this article is to provide a description of the SEM and how it would be implemented with the sport of bowling in order to promote lifetime engagement.
