View from the Border: Removing Barriers for Urban Gifted Students
Cannon, Michael
Gifted Child Today, v34 n1 p26-30 Win 2011
Borders--places where nations, people, and their cultures come together--are interesting spaces. The meeting may be friendly enough, but borders are by their nature places of "otherness," where those who are moving from one place to another are often conceived of as not belonging. High-ability students in this state of "otherness" have particular difficulties in accessing advanced-level coursework and in overcoming attitudes and preconceived notions of school personnel. This article describes two high schools in El Paso ISD (EPISD) in Texas and its various campuses. It also discusses advanced academic programs available in this district. (Contains 4 tables.)
