In last month's column, the authors examined the different kinds of maps that exist in everyday life. In this month's column, they experience, through simulation, the skills that are required of a cartographer. A cartographer is a person who practices the art of making maps. Cartographers' maps were often unique, visual representations of data. When examining different maps that were created in different centuries, one notices how various geographic features of the Earth, such as bodies of water, mountains, and deserts, have been depicted in a variety of ways. In examining the maps, it is evident that the style of the map was affected by the mapmaker's perspective of the world.
