A Summary of the Research Background of the New Children's Television Series "Big Blue Marble," September 1, 1973 to October 1, 1974.
International Telephone and Telegraph Corp., New York, NY.
The results of research undertaken to assess the impact of "Big Blue Marble," an international series of children's television shows sponsored by the International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation, are outlined in this paper. Summaries of the following projects are included: a concept study of consultants' roles in the early stages of program development, classroom research on screenings of pilot programs for 2,000 school children, a Trendex report of a telephone survey following preview telecasts, audience research on Nielsen analysis, audience target studies, "pen pal" mail, and focus group studies from unstructured group interviews during the preview month. Stanford University's pretest and posttest measures of change in children's perceptions and opinions are discussed, and additional research involving studies, in progress, on attitudinal changes and implicit or hidden values in the programs themselves is summarized. For each project, the purpose and methods, the findings, action or direction taken as a result of data, and future plans for research in each area are described. (KS)
