Policy, Practice in Giftedness, and Research Methodologies: Response to Roland S. Persson's Article
Matthews, Dona J.
Gifted and Talented International, v27 n1 p111-114 Aug 2012
The author finds the target article "Cultural Variation and Dominance in a Globalised Knowledge Economy" to be a thoughtful exploration of an important topic for all social scientists, certainly including those who study gifted development and education. Roland S. Persson (2012a) raises many questions about policy and practice in giftedness studies in an era of increasingly globalised perspectives on locally lived lives. He provides a good example of disciplinary diversity and several provocative nudges and suggestions about how to move away from the easy comforts of cultural complacency, ethnocentricity and culture-blindness. He also offers some useful tools and ideas for moving forward toward achieving a deeper and more meaningful cultural sensitivity. In this commentary, the author discusses Persson's (2012a) thoughts, suggestions, and recommendations, and introduces her own point of view concerning his article.
