During 1985 the Colorado Migrant Education Program and the Colorado Migrant Health Program provided a comprehensive health program for students enrolled in migrant summer schools. A total of 1,889 migrant children through age 21 (60% between 5 and 10 years of age) received health screening and physical assessment, referral for diagnosis and treatment of identified abnormalities, case management/followup, and preventive and health promotion/maintenance services. Health services were closely coordinated with day-to-day educational activities and involved parents and other family members. The program employed nearly 200 local physicians, dentists, pharmacists, and allied health providers and a seasonal staff of 17 nurses, 20 dental hygienists, 15 nutritionists, 30 dental students or recent graduates, and 6 nursing students organized into multidisciplinary teams and deployed at all 13 migrant education summer school sites. Health education units were incorporated into the migrant school curriculum and all health team members participated in classroom education, discussion groups, staff in-service training, and "family night" presentations. The report provides information on the service population, service providers, health encounters between provider and student, health screening procedures and outcomes, most frequent diagnoses, health education/activities/curriculum, financial resources, and future plans.
