Counseling Implications of Black Women's Market Position, Aspirations and Expectancies.
Gurin, Patricia; Pruitt, Anne
The major premise of this paper is that career and educational counseling for women, and particularly for black women, needs to be based on an understanding of their market position. Data on black women's options and choices in a discriminatory market, on their occupational and educational aspirations, and on the role of expectations in their work motivation are presented in conjunction with labor market statistics to demonstrate the effects of race and sex discrimination. The implications of these data on the need for special career and educational counseling are discussed. A counseling model, the "Student Development Model for Tomorrow's Higher Education," currently being developed by the College Personnel Association, is utilized to illustrate the ways counseling can serve the career needs of black women. Outlined are the roles of the counselor, the instructor, and other individuals in the guidance process, in helping black college women to alter their position in the labor market. (GC)
