Some of the best learning experiences can arise incidentally and unexpectedly from an event or good idea. This happened at the author's school, Laycock Primary in West Yorkshire, in April and May 2010. Children and staff returned from the Easter holidays to discover that a pair of blue tits had built their nest in a bird box on a wall in the playground. They were especially thrilled because the bird box had been fitted with a new webcam. The arrival of the new webcam and blue tits engaged all the children at the school in some real science enquiry. What made this experience so exciting was that staff and children alike seized the opportunity for some spontaneous science. This was an educationally productive experience and teachers cannot wait for the opportunity to build on what the students have learned about birds. (Contains 5 figures and 3 boxes.)
