Authentication is based on something one knows (e.g., a password), something one has (e.g., a driver's license), or something one is (e.g., a fingerprint). The last of these refers to the use of biometrics for authentication. With the blink of an eye, the touch of a finger, or the uttering of a pass-phrase, colleges and schools can now get deadly serious about physical security. With reference to two news release statements from "Washington Technology" on January 2006, the author predicts that biometrics may be going mainstream after years of hype. In this article, he discusses some common examples that are based on eye (iris and retinal) scans, fingerprints, keystroke dynamics, voice analysis, facial scans, hand geometry, and DNA analysis.
