Development of an Intravenous Therapy Module for Second Year Registered Nursing Students.
Balint, Marilyn
A study aimed at developing an intravenous therapy module for second-year registered nursing students is described in this practicum report. The report's five chapters define the underlying problem and purpose of the study; discuss the history of intravenous therapy and the significance of the module to the host institution; review the relevant literature; describe procedures used to complete the practicum; present the study findings with their implications; and make recommendations for implementing and validating the module. Four appendixes include parenteral infusion guidelines, an outline of critical elements for intravenous therapy, an outline of the individual therapy module, and a schedule and plan for use in presenting the module which includes lists of equipment needed for intravenous therapy labs. The parenteral infusion guidelines list the procedures that are prohibited for students and outline the procedures for setting up and maintaining an infusion. The list of critical elements for intravenous therapy details the steps involved in 12 procedures for setting up, maintaining, and adjusting intravenous infusions. The learning module lists 15 content areas ranging from: identifying common intravenous administration equipment and setting up and maintaining primary and secondary lines and volume-controlled sets to solving math problems related to intravenous credits. Also included in the module are a statement of purpose, time allotment, procedural outlines, lists of student and teacher responsibilities, assignments, testing procedures, and worksheets. (MN)
