In this article, a physiology instructor with primarily a cardiovascular (CV) background has wondered what approach to take, with both novice and senior learners, when it comes to delivering material on the pressure or flow generation of the heart. A debate surrounds the pressure propulsion versus flow generation theories, where some understand the CV system, and others envision ramifications, as it relates to clinical interventions and the development of future biomedical devices. As such, the author proposes that this article will, first, describe some of the salient points of each side; second, provide examples of how an instructor might incorporate the different concepts into their CV lectures, and, finally, make suggestions as to why it may be important to choose one over the other depending on the learner level.
