The Science and Art of Grand Rond de Jambe en l'air: Applications to Teaching and Performance
Wilson, Margaret
Journal of Dance Education, v8 n4 p117-125 2008
Recommendations for the teaching and performance of grand rond de jambe en l'air are presented. Incorporating both quantitative and qualitative data, information generated from biomechanic analysis is balanced with observation of the testing and questionnaire and interview data. The voices of the participants in the research contribute to an understanding of what is understood about grand rond de jambe en l'air as well as the dancers' perceptions of their performance in class and in the testing environment. The scientific and artistic perspectives offer unique information regarding grand rond de jambe en l'air. Quantitative and qualitative research regarding the performance of grand rond de jambe en l'air are presented together to identify the "science and art" of this complex movement. Information is provided that impacts both teaching and learning. Beginning with a review of literature regarding the performance of the movement, introducing the results from three biomechanic studies, and including questionnaire and interview data with participants in the conducted studies, recommendations are made for more clearly understanding the performance and teaching of grand rond de jambe en l'air. The ambiguity of teaching cues related to movement in the pelvis in grand rond de jambe en l'air is clarified--specifically the question of whether the pelvis should move in movements such as grand rond de jambe en l'air and, more generally, how the pelvis should respond to a large range of motion in the gesturing leg. These questions relate to identifying what is most important in teaching a complex movement such as grand rond de jambe en l'air and clear and effective communication regarding the many points that the dancer must consider when performing this movement are recommended.
