The relationship between characteristics of academic disciplines and intellectual traits of undergraduates was studied. Subject matter areas were structurally reflected in the university as department or major field groupings. A total of 2,278 students, graduating in either 1969-1970 or 1979-1980, were administered the 14 scales of the Omnibus Personality Inventory. Attention was focused on six scales: Thinking Introversion, Theoretical Orientation, Estheticism, Complexity, Autonomy, and Religious Orientation, collectively called the Intellectual Disposition Categories. Assessment was also based on Biglan's comprehensive model of academic subject matter areas, which is based on three dimensions: the existence of a paradigm within a field, the discipline's concern with the applications of knowledge, and concern with life (biology and social science) or with things, ideas, or data (art and mathematics). Statistical findings and narrative explanations and conclusions are provided. Appendices include: categorization of academic disciplines by Biglan's three dimensions (Science-Nonscience, Pure-Applied, Life-Nonlife); and descriptions of the 14 personality scales. (SW)
