Teaching Practices: Reexamining Assumptions.
Spodek, Bernard, Ed.
This publication contains eight papers, selected from papers presented at the Bicentennial Conference on Early Childhood Education, that discuss different aspects of teaching practices. The first two chapters reexamine basic assumptions underlying the organization of curriculum experiences for young children. Chapter 3 discusses the need to reevaluate assumptions about children's thought processes. In Chapter 4, the "here and now" approach to curriculum resulting from the progressive education movement is evaluated and a "future" orientation which helps children to develop coping skills to deal with novel situations is proposed. Chapter 5 reviews the values of parent cooperative nursery schools. Chapter 6 examines the impact of television on social learning and its untapped potential for generating prosocial behavior. Chapter 7 suggests an alternative model to deficit-oriented teacher supervision. In Chapter 8 an initial code of ethics for early childhood educators is proposed. (Author/SB)
