Experiencing the loss of a loved one can be one of the most traumatic events in a child's life. Grief resolution must be attained no matter how trivial a loss and it becomes even more important when a child's parent dies. School psychologists need to understand how the age of the child influences his ability to grieve and what behaviors might be exhibited during the grieving process. How death is explained to the child also influences understanding and resolution. Children react to the death of a loved one in a different manner than adults, and helping professionals need to understand these differences. Besides developmental factors, the emotional stability of the child prior to the loss, the sex of the child and of the deceased parent, and the circumstances surrounding the death all influence the bereavement process. Various interventions can be implemented within the school situation to help children deal with death. It is very important for parents and helping professionals to know where to turn for support and information to share with a child when a loved one dies.
