The Physical, Psychological, and Spiritual Assault.
Boccellari, Alicia; And Others
This document consists of the third section of a book written to educate and inform those in the helping professions on how to deal with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The four chapters in section 3 examine special issues for people with AIDS. "Caring for People With AIDS Dementia Complex" (Alicia Boccellari, Craig Kain, and Michael Shore) describes the clinical aspects of the AIDS dementia complex produced by the human immunodeficiency virus' (HIV) insidious ability to cross the blood-brain barrier. "Treating AIDS: A Family Therapy Perspective" (John Curtis) describes the impact of AIDS on the family system, defining family in its broadest sense and offering counselors suggestions on working with the "second chance" family as well as the nuclear family of someone with AIDS, his or her friends and lovers, as well as his or her spouse. "Modern Hospice Care" (Sr. Patrice Murphy and Carole Donovan) describes hospice care as one option that those in the last stages of life have. It also examines the bereavement services provided by hospice caregivers to loved ones that complete the continuum of hospice care. "Sustaining the Spirit" (Rev. Albert Ogle) shares a perspective on the deepest and most personal struggle that an HIV-infected person can face. It includes moving work by members of one parish, successfully struggling to counter the debilitating feelings of powerlessness AIDS encourages. (NB)
