Inappropriate behaviour from students and/or a teacher's inability to manage such behaviour effectively is one of the major contributors to stress amongst teachers and to poor learning by students. It is important for science leaders to support members of their department, and, critically, have systems that work. Their aim should be to create an atmosphere in which teachers feel able to air their concerns and are confident that of their leaders' support. This brief article provides recommendations on how science leaders can lead by example, provide practical support, and back their colleagues. Next, it discusses the types of organisational issues that can affect the behavior of a group including the timing of lessons, the location of the laboratory, the size of the laboratory, equipment, and who teaches what set. The article concludes by suggesting the possible benefit of speaking to non-science colleagues and tips on what to do if a colleague is failing to follow departmentally agreed procedures.
