Target Homework to Maximize Learning
Heitzmann, Ray
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v72 n7 p40-43 Mar 2007
Targeted homework is based upon the belief that homework can make a significant contribution to student achievement in the areas of knowledge, skills, and values. It centers on the notion that homework achieves maximum effectiveness when teachers share the school's homework policy as well as their policy with students and parents or guardians. The growing interest in homework, by the public and the education community, underscores its potential for a very positive impact upon students. More importantly, careful implementation of the targeted homework approach offers many benefits to teachers of all grade levels and students of all needs and abilities. Adding this instructional strategy to the arsenal of teachers' methods provides another opportunity for learner success. Four categories of homework--practice, prepreparation, extension, and creative--are reviewed, and tips for implementing targeted homework are presented.
