Between 2002 and 2012, information technology (IT) procedural decisions related to technology, fraud, bias, greed, and misleading information increased cost by more than $44 billion. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore IT professionals' experiences of IT procedural decisions. The research questions were intended to learn from the professional experiences of a Midwestern Fortune 500 company about the informational, situational, or behavioral characteristics that influence IT procedural decisions. Systems theory served as the conceptual framework. A purposive sample of 20 IT professionals completed semistructured interviews and described their personal experiences. All data were analyzed using coded keywords, phrases, and concepts. The procedural decision themes identified were as follows: (a) decision entropy, (b) information quality, (c) exponential growth of data, and (d) team experience. The findings indicated that procedural decisions improve when situational, informational, and behavioral considerations are applied equally. These findings suggest that a monitoring mechanism should be established that would include inspection, continuing education, communication, corrective action, and audit independence. The recommendations of this study may benefit both researchers and organizational leaders as evidence indicated the importance of mitigating situations that can lead to poor decisions. The implications for positive social change include decision improvements for business practices, financial sustainability, and consumer satisfaction.
