Translation of Evidence-Based Practices in a Behaviour Support Implementation Model for Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorders
Lyons, Gregory
International Journal of Disability, Development and Education, v58 n4 p409-415 2011
Linda Miller describes a model for the practical implementation of behaviour supports. This model, the "5P approach", attempts to delineate a comprehensive and sequentially-stepped model of the assessment and treatment of challenging behaviour with consistent colour-coded themes. The 5Ps include profiling the child, prioritising the challenging behaviours, analysing the problem, problem-solving, and planning the intervention. "Practical Behaviour Management Solutions for Children and Teens with Autism: The 5P Approach" offers very practical tools including an "ABBBC" data sheet for functional behaviour assessment (noted as "problem analysis" in the book), visual aids, flowcharts for determining function(s) of challenging behaviour, and flowcharts for planning interventions based on the previously mentioned colour-coding system. This book attempts to contextualise behaviour supports not only within the day-today context, but also within the context of the overall intervention programme for a child with autism.
