Denying Diversity: Perceptions of Beauty and Social Comparison Processes among Latina, Black, and White Women.
Poran, Maya A.
Sex Roles: A Journal of Research, v47 n1-2 p65-82 Jul 2002
Investigated Hispanic, black, and white women's conceptions of beauty and perceptions of cultural standards of beauty, noting whether they were engaged in similar social comparison processes (denial of personal disadvantage). Surveys of female college students highlighted major differences in the women's relationships with their bodies and their relationships to dominant cultural standards of beauty. There were differences by race in tendency to engage in denial of personal disadvantage. (SM)
