Truth & Beauty: Mathematics in Literature
Cohen, Marion D.
Mathematics Teacher, v106 n7 p534-539 Mar 2013
Today there are many categories of mathematics literature, including fiction and poetry. Mathematics fiction appears in such anthologies as "Fantasia Mathematica" (Fadiman 1958, 1997) and "The Mathematical Magpie" (Fadiman 1962, 1997). In addition, mathematics fiction is featured at http://kasmana.people.cofc.edu/MATHFICT. Mathematics poetry has been collected in "Strange Attractors: Poems of Love and Mathematics" (Glaz and Growney 2008). Single-author collections include Alex Kasman's "Reality Conditions" (2005), Leonard Michaels's "Collected Stories" (2007), Joanne Growney's "My Dance Is Mathematics" (2006), and Marion D. Cohen's "Crossing the Equal Sign" (2007). This article describes Truth and Beauty: Mathematics in Literature, the course that the author developed and teaches. This course explores mathematical writings as well as the mathematics that inspired them, thereby imparting appreciation of mathematics, literature, and the connection between the two. Although developed as a college course, satisfying both a mathematics and a writing requirement, it could easily be adapted for high school by changing expectations as to mathematical and worldly maturity.
