Strings Got Rhythm: A Guide to Developing Rhythmic Skills in Beginners
Dell, Charlene
Music Educators Journal, v96 n3 p31-34 2010
String educators must find a way to strengthen the development of rhythmic abilities so that their students play with a steady beat and accurate rhythm. Perhaps it is not what they teach their students as much as the sequence of instruction they use to teach them. String educators teach rhythm only as it pertains to the instrument, either through bowing in rhythm or through fingering in rhythm. Yet, they often do not take the time to address steady beat and rhythmic figures away from the instrument. As technique becomes more difficult, rhythmic sense is ignored because it has been taught only as a function of technique. When students struggle with technique, they struggle with keeping the beat steady rather than learning to fit what they "can" play into the steady beat. String educators must also find a way to strengthen the development of steady beat to allow greater rhythmic accuracy to develop as well. In this article, the author provides some ideas to assist string educators in teaching beginners to maintain a steady beat and to understand rhythm. (Contains 6 notes.)
