Exploring Behavioral Intentions among Young Mothers
Turney, Howard M.; Conway, Pat; Plummer, Pam; Adkins, Samuel E.; Hudson, George Cliff; McLeod, David A.; Zafaroni, Aileen
Journal of Family Social Work, v14 n4 p298-310 2011
This study examined the relationship between young mothers' individual characteristics (demographics and self-efficacy), social support, and behavioral intentions regarding education and child bearing. Using a home visiting model, the program recruited 141 teen mothers to participate. Young mothers completed an initial assessment, measuring demographics, self-efficacy, intentions regarding completion of high school and delaying a second pregnancy, and financial and social support. The young mothers reported relatively high levels of self-efficacy and an intention to complete high school. They depended primarily on parents for housing, financial support, and someone to talk to.
