Final Report of the Vocational Assessment Project, 1979-80.
Rutgers, The State Univ., New Brunswick, NJ. School of Medicine.
To improve vocational rehabilitation programs for schizophrenic persons, a project sought to design an effective assessment strategy. Inactive records of schizophrenic clients at New Jersey sheltered workshops were examined to determine validity and reliability of assessment instruments being used. General Aptitude Test Battery (GATB) profiles of schizophrenic clients were collected to establish norms and determine GATB validity and reliability. Vocational assessment interviews were conducted with continuing care clients and schizophrenic patients using the Career Maturity Inventory (CMI), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE), Strong Campbell Interest Inventory (SCII), Differential Aptitude Test (DAT), three motivational measures, SCL-90, Individual Client Inventory, Katz Social Adjustment Scale (SKAS), and Vocational History Questionnaire (VHQ). An unstandardized questionnaire (VHQ) was found to reliably and validly measure interests and aptitudes, surpassing SCII. Traditional vocational assessment strategies were not reliable or valid. Reliability of DAT, RSE, and CMI could not be established. KSAS and Work Related Activities Scales had excellent predictive validity as measures of work readiness and rehabilitation potential. Although reliable, SCL-90 was not related to current employment status. CMI scales and biographical data failed to predict employment status. (Appendixes include assessment instruments and a sample-completed vocational assessment.) (Author/YLB)
