Investing Equity Funding in Early Literacy
Batten, Pat
ERS Spectrum, v22 n1 p40-45 Win 2004
The United States has long been concerned with providing equal, quality education for all its citizens. With state-granted equity funding to needy districts comes the responsibility of wise use of equity monies. This study is an example of how three New Jersey districts invested their equity funding in a highly effective early literacy program--Reading Recovery--and closed the literacy achievement gap for those minority students who successfully completed the program. Data gathered by schools participating in this study substantiate student growth and program effectiveness. (Contains 2 tables.)
