This book provides a comprehensive study of the Institute of Education, University of London, the United Kingdom's premier institution for the study of education. Founded in 1902 as the London Day Training College to provide teachers for London's elementary schools, a century later that Institute has become a college of the University of London, a national and international postgraduate center for educational inquiry. Drawing upon a wide range of sources, including previously unused archival material and formal interviews with key figures, the book sets the Institute's story within metropolitan, national, and international contexts. It includes some of the most influential figures in 20th-century education, including Sidney Webb, Sophie Bryant, Cyril Burt, Marion Richardson, Joseph Lauwerys, Basil Bernstein, Ann Oakley, and Peter Mortimore.
