Applied Music (Individual Study).
Texas Education Agency, Austin.
Background information and resources to help students in grades 9-12 in Texas pursue an individual study contract in applied music is presented. To fulfill a contract students must publicly perform from memory, with accompaniment as specified, three selections from a list of approved music for their chosen field (instrument or voice). Material selected must represent more than one period of music history. Students must also demonstrate the ability to perform technical studies and scales commensurate with the difficulty of the memorized selections. The bulk of this publication contains the approved list for applied music in the categories of piano, organ, and classic guitar. The list provides choices for various interests and levels of proficiency and indicates the period in which the music falls, e.g., baroque, romantic, classical. (The approved lists for other instruments and for voice are not included in this plan. However, availability information on publications containing these lists is provided.) Also provided is a student contract, a performance examiners' certification of grade and fulfillment of contract, and a discussion of administrative concerns, course requirements, and performance examinations.
