This document includes three products of an international meeting on productive work in education. First, the secretariat working document addresses itself to problems arising from the introduction of productive work into general (elementary and secondary) education. It examines recommendations on this issue, reviews relevant documents from UNESCO meetings, describes various education-work experiments, investigates the objectives assigned to them, and explores the impact of productive work schemes on the planning, organization, and operation of the educational system. The second part of the document presents 14 papers by meeting participants. Topics include: productive work as an element of general education in Yugoslavia, the alteration of education/work schemes to fit the political/social contexts of the adopting society, productive work in Cuba, productive labor and education in China, the Beninese experience in education/productive work, work education in Bangladesh, educational development in Nigeria, work and education in India, education and work as an approproach to anticipatory socialization, the development of Tanzanian educational reform, quality and effectiveness of work experience programs in Third World schools, and productive work in education in Vietnam and Gulf Arab States. The final report of the meeting, included as the third portion of this document, offers a rationale for the introduction of productive work in education; considers the impact on and consequences for structures, contents, methods, and educators; addresses new problems of program evaluation; and lists participant suggestions.
