Options in Public Education: Academic Interest Centers.
Chicago Board of Education, IL. Dept. of Program Development/Alternative Schools.
In this booklet, the use of Academic Interest Centers (AIC) in Chicago public schools is described. An AIC is defined as an educational option program which: (1) concentrates a unique combination of resources for academic improvement in one location; (2) serves children of various racial/ethnic backgrounds in a way that advances their academic interests, talents and social growth; (3) enriches the basic skills of elementary and secondary school students; and (4) is developed in conjunction with members of the community. The history and objectives of the AICs in Chicago are outlined. Guidelines for the development of AICs are provided. Elements in program development, including location, resources, space, programming, staffing, and organization, are explained. The parameters within which the AIC program may vary are stated along with evaluation procedures. (WI)
