Student Characteristics Report, Fall 1977.
Metropolitan Community Colleges of Kansas City, MO. Div. of Planning and Development.
As part of a continuing survey of student characteristics at the Metropolitan Community Colleges, this report presents data from 14,918 regular credit enrollment students for fall 1977 and compares them to data from 1972. For the first time in the district's history, the majority of students (54%) were female, a shift that has only occurred in the past two years and one reflecting a five-year trend toward greater part-time enrollment. In 1972, 52% were part-time students as compared to 70% in 1977; there has been an accompanying gradual decline (9.7%) in day enrollment over the past six years and a corresponding increase (5.5%) in evening and weekend enrollment. The ratio of freshmen to sophomores (68.3% to 31.7%) has remained relatively constant. Figures for 1977 showed a higher percentage of minority students, from 17% in 1972 to 27% in 1977. Veteran enrollment reflected one of the most drastic student body changes, declining from better than one out of four in spring 1975 to 13% in fall 1977. Means of transportation to college represented a steady change over five years, while commuting distance, parental occupation and education, student financial and employment status, high school grade point averages and class ranks, and reasons for pursuing a college education and choosing a community college were constant. Twenty-nine data tables and a copy of the survey questionnaire are included. (TR)
