The Behavioral Attitudes of Young People of the Post-Soviet Generation
Iadova, M. A.
Russian Education and Society, v49 n8 p68-89 Aug 2007
In the period of active transformations in Russian society in the past several decades it is extremely difficult to speak of any generally accepted standards of behavior. Specialists have noted that all countries that are undergoing "postcommunist" transformations are characterized by a discrepancy between social norms that are codified in the laws and those that are actually practiced. People's behavioral attitudes represent a projection of their attitudes toward social norms. It is especially important to study the behavioral attitudes of young Russians whose worldview and behavior have been formed under the influence of post-Soviet changes. In this article, the author looks at the behavioral attitudes that are widespread among young people from the standpoint of A. Inkeles's conception of the "modern individual." The data are the result of an exploratory study devoted to the correlation between the "traditional" and the "modern" in behavioral attitudes of young people of the post-Soviet generation. The basis of the "modern" type of behavior is the type of actions that corresponds to the basic characteristics of his analytical model of the "modern individual"--an active citizen with a well-developed sense of social responsibility, internally independent and intellectually self-sufficient, with a high degree of legal awareness and tolerance.
