"Limbo" through the Looking Glass: Adding the Voice of Family to the First Generation College Experience
Daniel, Malinda Nichols
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Wyoming
In 2009 of the 9,793 undergraduates attending the University of Wyoming during the fall semester, 3,453 of them were first generation college students. The cultural assimilation often associated with college for first generation college students is often experienced by not only the student, but also the family left at home. This research serves as a place for the voice of the family of first generation college students to share their experience as it relates to having a child leave for college and return home during and after the assimilation process in hopes of uncovering how one family's, the Morales family's, dynamics, values, and perspectives contributed to their daughter's success in college through the utilization of narrative inquiry. This problem based study uncovered points of consideration for families seeking to support their children through the collegiate process as well as questions regarding the dissemination of information on resources which could benefit first generation college students. One particular point of consideration surrounds the dissemination of materials regarding available resources to not only first generation college students, but to the families of these students who are striving to provide support to their children.
