Hispanics Find Jobs that Shift Migration
Gilroy, Marilyn
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v72 n6 p49-53 Feb 2007
Economic opportunity, the force that has driven population shifts for years, is changing the face of migration as Hispanics move into parts of the nation beyond border states and traditional ports of entry. North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and Indiana are experiencing a steady growth in Hispanic population. In addition, West Virginia, Ohio, and parts of the Midwest, such as Kansas, are feeling the impact of changing demographics. According to a recent report by the Brookings Institution, while Hispanics still are heading to the big cities, many are moving to historically white, non-Hispanic areas. William Frey, author of the study "Diversity Spreads Out: Metropolitan Shifts in Hispanic, Asian, and Black Populations Since 2000," says that significant numbers of lower-skilled Hispanic migrants are moving to fast-growing areas of the country in response to job opportunities in retail, service, and construction industries. In this article, the author describes the recent trends in the U.S. immigration and discusses the profound effects of Hispanic migration on local culture, economy and politics.
