Assessing Quality in Further and Higher Education. Higher Education Policy Series 24.
Ashworth, Allan; Harvey, Roger
This book addresses the issues of educational quality from a British perspective considering how educational quality can be evaluated within the higher education system. It is intended for managers of colleges and universities where quality control is exercised and provides scientific techniques which will allow them to maintain and improve their standards of quality. It considers both qualitative and quantitative types of evaluation. The book also identifies changes which are expected to occur in the next decade and which will have an impact upon the post compulsory educational system. Areas discussed include: (1) quality and the role of performance indicators; (2) organization and resources; (3) students; (4) teaching and learning; (5) curriculum; and (6) standards and assessment. Appendices include a 1990 list of university management statistics and performance indicators; some performance indicators of research activity; the evaluation of a quality grade descriptor using an intelligent knowledge based system; and the procedures used for the calculations of input profile, output profile, and added value. Most chapters include references. Contains an index. (GLR)
