Reclaiming Indigenous Voice and Vision.
Battiste, Marie, Ed.
This book springs from a 1996 International Summer Institute, held at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, on the cultural restoration of oppressed Indigenous peoples. Essays draw on many perspectives and experiences to seek ways of healing and rebuilding nations, peoples, and communities by restoring Indigenous ecologies, consciousnesses, and languages, and by creating bridges between Indigenous and Eurocentric knowledge. Following an introduction "Unfolding the Lessons of Colonization" (Marie Battiste) and a prologue "The Experience of Colonization around the World" (Erica-Irene Daes), the 18 chapters are: "The Context of the State of Nature" (James Sakej Youngblood Henderson); "Indigenous Peoples and Postcolonial Colonialism" (Robert Yazzie); "Hawaiian Statehood Revisited" (Poka Laenui Hayden F. Burgess); "Postcolonial Ghost Dancing: Diagnosing European Colonialism" (James Sakej Youngblood Henderson); "Jagged Worldviews Colliding" (Leroy Little Bear); "Applied Postcolonial Clinical and Research Strategies" (Bonnie Duran, Eduardo Duran); "Transforming the Realities of Colonialism: Voyage of Self-Discovery" (Ian Hingley); "A Different Yield" (Linda Hogan); "From Hand to Mouth: The Postcolonial Politics of Oral and Written Traditions" (J. Edward Chamberlin); "The 'Repressive Tolerance' of Cultural Peripheries" (Asha Varadharajan); "Processes of Decolonization" (Poka Laenui Hayden F. Burgess); "Postcolonial Ledger Drawing: Legal Reform" (James Sakej Youngblood Henderson); "Invoking International Law" (Ted Moses); "Indigenous Knowledge: The Pueblo Metaphor of Indigenous Education" (Gregory Cajete); "Maintaining Aboriginal Identity, Language, and Culture in Modern Society" (Marie Battiste); "Protecting and Respecting Indigenous Knowledge" (Graham Hingangaroa Smith); "Kaupapa Maori Research" (Linda Tuhiwai Te Rina Smith); and "Ayukpachi: Empowering Aboriginal Thought" (James Sakej Youngblood Henderson). Appendices contain the United Nations principles and guidelines for protection of the heritage of Indigenous peoples, and policy recommendations on cultural restoration developed at the Saskatoon summer institute. (Contains references in each chapter and an index.) (SV)
