Software and Courseware for a Multimedia Educational Environment.
Le Corre, Yves; Schwartz, Jacob
Prepared for a 1984 Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) conference, this report on the educational applications of new information technologies focuses primarily on the use of interactive audiovisual systems. Potential advantages of interactive multimedia educational environments are discussed and examples are given of educational packages soon to be available that involve simulation and the application of artificial intelligence. A review of the courseware design process phases and definitions of terms used to describe courseware structure are followed by an outline of the principal hardware elements of future computer assisted instruction systems and cost trends. Capabilities of the software, which controls courseware question and answer sequences and their presentation via the audiovisual environment, are discussed, and the computer assisted instruction environment is described. An outline of methods of courseware distribution and sources for courseware selection are presented, as well as a review of legal opinions on the protection of intellectual property embodied in software and courseware. Uses of the computer as a tool for educational research and for training in the use and production of courseware are also discussed. Appendices include information on acronyms and basic glossaries of computer and computer assisted instruction terminology. (MBR)
