Moving Museum Experiences
Weisberg, Shelley Kruger
Journal of Museum Education, v36 n2 p199-208 Sum 2011
As Howard Gardner persuasively argued, movement, or kinesthetics, can be a powerful educational tool and one to which some learners are particularly attuned. Museums, however, are typically places that discourage movement (don't run, don't jump, watch out for the artifacts). This makes incorporating kinesthetic learning challenging. This article provides one model for overcoming the challenge in a disciplined manner that engages, but protects the artifacts. Museum Movement Techniques (MMT) integrates visual and movement thinking strategies to strengthen the understanding of museum objects. The article provides the rationale for using movement as tool for engagement and examples of applications by trained MMT educators. (Contains 11 notes.)
