A liberal arts environment invites the expansion of one's understanding of himself/herself and the world by exposing him/her to multiple disciplines across the humanities and social sciences. For its part, the topic of "narrative" is intrinsically interdisciplinary and, as such, can be explored to particular advantage within a liberal arts setting. This article focuses on how one can exploit this coincidence of interdisciplinary topic and multidisciplinary environment to best assist students in developing "a good, strong story" by which to live their lives. As well, it is on how the cross-disciplinary collaborations such an environment enables can help in expanding one's understanding of narrative itself. The author will begin with narrative itself and then consider the concepts of narrative identity and narrative development, particularly the role of the liberal arts in fostering the latter. Toward the end, he will talk about the merits of the liberal arts for deepening one's appreciation of the narrative complexity of life as a whole. He will conclude with a postscript on the link among narrative, aging, and wisdom.
