This paper cites some of the contributions that sociology has made to desegregation policy. The major contribution, made by public opinion research, is establishing the level of support or opposition to busing policy. A second contribution to desegregation policy has been made by those sociologists and social psychologists who have studied the educational consequences of desegregation. The main contribution of this research has been the elimination of unproven assumptions about the educational and social benefits of desegregation and segregation. Research in the area of white flight stands to have the greatest impact on future desegregation policy because unlike public opinion or educational-benefits research, there is ample precedent for introducing evidence on enrollment stability to the lower courts considering alternative desegregation plans.
