In this article, the author talks about "honor" and describes how the word has been taken for granted in schools. He explains that "honor" traditionally, has had two meanings, and that the National Honor Society (NHS) reflects the most ancient of them. Like Aristotle, who described honor in his "Nicomachean Ethics" as "the prize of virtue and the tribute that we pay to the good," NHS views honor as closely related to public approbation. It can also mean personal integrity or conscience. In this second sense, it is often equated with moral courage. The difference between the two concepts of honor can be summed up as the difference between inner conviction and outer compulsion. Here, he stresses that honor is not conformity to popular opinion, but the courage to stand up to popular opinion; it is not obedience, but instead the courage to criticize authority; it is not devotion to external goals, but the courage to pursue personal goals.
