Blurred in Translation: Reflections on Pedagogy in Public Education
Hamilton, David
Pedagogy, Culture and Society, v17 n1 p5-16 2009
The word pedagogy is increasingly used in English-language texts. Its application, however, is not always clear since authors draw upon different inherited uses. Currently, it serves as a synonym of education; or it can reflect other definitions that have arisen from its integration, through time, into the world of public schooling. This paper, then, is an act of clarification. It does not seek a unitary definition. Rather, it attempts to give a sense of how and why such a word has been blurred in translation. (Contains 1 note.)
