[Heritage Education Lesson Plans and Slide Presentations].
Van Buren, Maurie
Field tested in 27 schools and in grades four through twelve, this teaching unit stresses heritage education through the study of southern U.S. architectural styles for homes from the pioneer log structures to the 1950s ranch home. Each of the four lessons in this unit focuses around a slide presentation of 20 slides designed to fit into one 50-minute class period and is keyed to a teacher's narrative and a list of terms. The slides are reproduced on the narrative so the teacher can correctly identify the architectural conventions and styles that are presented. The four lessons are entitled "Pioneer Home", "White Columns,""Victorian Era," and "20th Century Homes." The lessons include the objectives, procedures for reinforcing the knowledge learned through the slide presentations, and "Visual Survey Forms" of hand-drawn architectural conventions and styles to be issued prior to the lesson. This unit also provides: (1) objectives, thinking skills, and basic concepts for heritage education; (2) how to use heritage education across the curriculum; (3) the purpose of historical architectural styles as a teaching tool; and (4) a 5-item bibliography.
