A Guide to Federal Funding in the Arts and Humanities.

Summaries of federal programs in the arts and humanities that are of interest to colleges and universities are presented in this guide. Programs for institutions and programs for individuals are sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Office of Education, the Smithsonian Institution, the Department of State, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, and the National Gallery of Art. The following fields are included in the arts: architecture and environmental arts; crafts; dance; folk arts; literature; music; media; theatre; and the visual arts. Disciplines within the humanities include but are not limited to: language; linguistics; literature; history; jurisprudence; philosophy; archeology; comparative religion; ethics; the history, criticism, theory and practice of the arts; those aspects of the social sciences that have humanistic content and employ humanistic methods; and the study and application of the humanities to the human environment.
