"Capital City" chronicles the movement of Iowa's capital as the state matured from territory to statehood and "Des Moines Timeline" lists significant events from 1843-1988. "Terrace Hill" describes the history of a nineteenth century mansion that has become the official governor's residence. "Booming Business" explores the growth of business and the development of Des Moines into a major business center. "The Wonder Years" traces the city's growth since the turn of the century, including a population chart, questions for children, and a "Skywalk Maze Game" that challenges children to find their way around a map of downtown. "Des Moines' Immigrants: Today and Yesterday" discusses immigration in general and relates the experience of a Cambodian refugee who settled in the city. "The Roadside Settlement House" describes how charities helped immigrants settle in a new city. "Sister Cities" discuses the establishment of Des Moines' sister cities in China, Japan, Mexico, and France.
