This revised text on teaching junior and senior high school students with mild learning and behavior problems is intended to provide a reference for practical and proven ideas. Principles of the instructional approach advocated include: outcome-based educational programming inclusive of learning strategies and career education; use of the cooperative/collaborative instructional model; and preparation for transition to adult life in the community. Individual chapters address the following topics (and sample subtopics): (1) an overview of adolescents with learning and behavioral differences (classification, definition, and terminology); (2) program administration (organizational models, curricular design, and team planning); (3) the assessment process (prereferral activities, the interdisciplinary team process, and teacher assessment); (4) instruction in learning strategies (cognitive strategies, strategies for improved thinking, and social skills training); (5) remedial instruction (motivation, reading, writing, and mathematics remediation); (6) compensatory and tutorial instruction (mnemonic instruction); (7) vocational education and transition instruction (definitions and program components); (8) affective and social skills instruction (assessing and developing affective-social skills); and (9) technological applications (computer software, interactive video, and administrative applications for microcomputers).
