Middle School, One-to-One
Weber, Eric G.
Principal Leadership, v10 n4 p27-31 Dec 2009
Westside Middle School, located in Omaha, Nebraska, serves 950 seventh- and eighth-grade students. Over the last few years, the school's teachers and administrators have evaluated its technology status and needs. As part of this process, the staff members engaged in many activities, including developing a building-level technology plan, organizing technology work groups, upgrading teacher laptops, and conducting technology training with teachers to enhance student learning. The most important steps were looking closely at students' technology needs, researching best practices regarding instructional technology, and studying initiatives that had had a profound impact on learning. Westside educators did not have to travel far: Westside High School had had a successful one-to-one laptop initiative for four years and had recently been named an Apple Distinguished School. The middle school teachers also conducted site visits and engaged in conversations with teachers at other middle schools that had one-to-one initiatives in place. In addition, the school conducted internal action research through a four-week one-to-one pilot that gave 24/7 laptop access to a single group of 50 students. The pilot program's impact on learning was impressive, revealing strong evidence of student success, and was followed by extensive research regarding one-to-one programs in middle schools. The potential of a one-to-one laptop initiative was apparent, so it was extended to Westside Middle.
