Nine reports published in this volume study the uneasy coexistence of modern man and the complex society he has wrought. Man's apparent disorganized behavior is attributed to his inability to adapt readily to the charged pace of technological change. To combat the advancement of machine over man, he must, therefore, insist that moral and humanistic judgements be brought to bear on the application of his discoveries. What happens to contemporary man when he becomes overwhelmed by this mad pace of technological change and the vision of impermanence that it implies are the topics scrutinized in the reports. They consider the new humanism, its relation to western civilization, response to the technological age, and challenges to humanist ideals; urbanization of the earth--effects of population implosion, changing patterns of growth, and future survival in an urban environment; the cause and effect, understanding and coping with stress in modern life; the status of women and equal rights; the myth or reality of the sexual revolution; occultism vs. religious beliefs of the churches; communal living; and the psychological counseling of students.
