Carlos Gentile, a photographer with no other family, took the boy for his son, baptizing him as Carlos Montezuma. From the time of his capture, the boy was confronted with things that were new and strange to him. His captors, men on horseback, at first seemed like two-part demons to a child who had never seen a horse. The white settlers were "far different from any people he had seen or imagined." But Carlos was a person of exceptional intelligence and abilities. In a short period of time, a young boy whose childhood had been centered around learning the arts of survival found himself confortable in a world of books, locomotives, photographs, rifles, and countless other unfamiliar items. Carols Montezuma went on to become a medical doctor, developing a successful practice in Chicago. At the peak of his career he returned to the Apaches as a spokesman.
